Sports Equipment

Items & Specifications

    * : If the weight of the sports equipment is less than 23kg/50lbs and the total linear dimensions (length+width+height) do not exceed 158cm/62ins, the sports equipment will be categorized as "small/mid-sized sports equipment".

    Large items
    Surfing board
    Wind surfboard
    etc(*)

    * : If the weight/total linear dimensions (length+width+height) of the sports equipment exceed 23kg/158cm(50lbs/62ins) and are 32kg/277cm (70lbs/109ins) or less, the sports equipment will be categorized as "large-sized sports equipment".

Charges
International
Small/Medium items : Oversized fee shall be waived (However, overweight fee shall be applied in case the equipment exceeds 23kg)
Oversized fee shall be applied : Large items (Overweight fee shall be applied in case the equipment exceeds 23kg)
※ If baggage count (sports equipment + number of bags to be checked) exceeds the maximum number of items allowed by class, additional checked baggage fee (for extra baggage) will apply, in addition to the oversized fee and/or overweight fee.
note1) Surfboard will be charged per bag (or container)
Korea Domestic
Small/Medium items : they will be accepted as part of Free Baggage Allowance. Excess baggage charges shall apply only if total baggage exceeds the free baggage allowance.
Large items : they will not be accepted as part of Free Baggage Allowance. Excess baggage fees corresponding to 5kg/11lbs are charged.

Pets

Pet Transport Information
Pets on board
Dogs, cats and birds
Transporting animals and/or insects other than dogs, cats, and pet birds through a plane is not allowed and thus we recommend our passengers make inquiries about transportation of such an animal and/or insect to a freight agency.
Pets traveling as carry-on
If the pet in the kennel weighs 5kg or less : In cabin
If the pet in the kennel weighs more than 5kg and less than 32kg : In the cargo compartment
Documentation required
Customs documentation (2 copies), rabies vaccination certificate (2 copies) and documentation provided by the animal quarantine office (2 copies)
As regulations regarding the transport of pets can vary by country.

  • Regardless of your free baggage allowance, Excess baggage charge shall apply for the total weight of your pet and the kennel.
Type of Transport Containers
  • Containers with ample space that allows pets to move around without difficulty
  • Firm containers made from metal, wood, plastic, etc. (However, cloth or leather containers are allowed for carry-on pets)
  • Containers that are equipped with air ventilator and is water resistant
  • Locks (must be able to be opened from the outside in the case of an emergency), water resistant
  • Lined with paper, a cloth towel, blanket, etc.
  • Containers with owner’s name and contact information written clearly on the outside

Musical Instruments

Transporting Musical Instruments as Carry-on Baggage
  • You should contact Korean Air Service Center (☎1588-2001) to reserve a seat to transport your instrument as carry-on baggage.
  • As a large instrument will occupy an extra seat when carried into the cabin, the passenger must purchase an extra ticket in lieu of excess baggage charges.
Transporting Musical Instruments as Checked Baggage
  • A musical instrument can be checked-in free of charge as long as the total baggage weight, the pieces, and the size of each baggage, including the musical instrument, are within the free baggage allowance.
  • Due to possible damage occurring during transport, passengers should pack instruments with care in hard cases and with ample shock absorbing material/padding.

Valuables

Restricted check-in items including valuables
  • High-priced electronic products: laptop computers, camcorders, cameras, MP3 players
  • Currency, jewelry, documents, fragile goods etc.
  • Passengers should not place high-priced valuables as above in check-in baggage, and are allowed to carry such items on board.
Ad Valorem Duties
  • Korean Air operates a system of ‘ad valorem’ duties that guarantees the compensation of reported item value in the case of damage or loss if a fixed extra fee corresponding to the flight route is paid by the passenger.
  • Ad valorem duties are calculated as USD 0.5 per USD 100 of item value reported.
